New member. Nov 4, 2010. #1. I have had an issue with my starter on my 99 XJ for some time now. The starter engages, turns great and fires the engine. Once the engine fires and I bring the key back to the ‘on’ position the starter stays engaged. I pull the relay and the starter would disengage and the jeep would stay running.
Here are 2 things to try, 1st pull the starter relay & WITH IT IN NEUTRAL OR PARK & THE BRAKE SET verify that terminal 30 has battery power & jump between the 30 & 87 terminals (terminal #s usually marked on the side of the relay). The starter doesn't click at all. I've had the starter and battery check and both are ok. I've replaced the the starter relay and grounded the clutch switch, put a fuse in the bypass slot for the switch and still nothing happens when I turn the key. I've connected the positive terminal on the battery to the starter and it spins the starter motor.Remove it and no crank. It seems like I'm dealing with some resistance in the starter circuit wiring somewhere. I pulled the starter and put it in my vise. Hooked up the battery to it with my push button remote starter and it works fine. I put the battery back in the Jeep and hooked up a test light to the small solenoid wire from the starter.Find this relay in Patriot PDC. Here is the picture of Liberty PDC. You can try to bypass ignition switch relay in PDC (black plastic box under the hood with fuses and relays) and if jeep start cranking, problem is in switch or pin.
