I used broadsword first, then an ultra greatsword for endgame, then in NG+3 endgame I switched to dual wield bandit axe. The poise break from the greatsword was essential to me in the endgame areas. The speed from the bandit axe really deals good damage quickly, and using both in one hit makes it like a greatsword in damage from one button press.
