My wildlings seem to do very well in sieges. Spear, axe, plus javelin sniping, and a very big shield with better body armor then even the trained spearman, and to top it off quick movement speed. Sturgian veteran warriors are probably pretty good. t5 crossbowmen are great at sniping enemy archers.
best shock infantry as of 1.8? Currently running half empire trained Inf and half Voulgiers' for main line infantry. Usually only loose 2 or 3 of them while they make up 60% of the kills.
