The 5946 was built during the heyday of Stainless Steel, big frame semi auto's. They are very rugged and well built. And are all but impossible to wear out. Today the trend is lighter, cheaper, and smaller because of the popularity of concealed carry. Few citizens want to carry a 40 ounce, all steel pistol.

08-12-2011 08:32 AM. 617 Trigger Pull Weight. Hello, I purchased a new model 617 about a month ago. Having only owned/shot Smith CF revolvers, I was very disappointed with the trigger pull weights, both SA & DA, as it came from the factory. The DA pull was off the scale on my spring gauge, but estimated to be about 9 1/2#. The SA pull was 4 1/2#.

I already own a Shield but the Shield Plus has intrigued me since it came out. I really like the extra capacity and today I finally pulled the trigger. It's dimensionally almost identical to my Shield, but the short mag holds 10 rounds instead of 7, and the longer mag holds 13 instead of 8.
