Update: Ended up going to Rockaway yesterday (Monday). Took the ferry from Wall Street which had a decently long line for the 10:15 ferry. Once you get off the ferry terminal there a shuttle bus can take you to Jacob Riis where the beach is. Beach was again packed but not so crowded that I couldn't have my own spot.Map.
