Pyro works best as a build compliment rather than a build focus. What really makes pyro go is the strength of your pyromancy flame and you have a decision here too. If you prefer to use the Ring of Binding and stay hollow then you want the Dark Pyromancy Flame to get your Fire Seed. At the very least, 24 for 4 spell slots. Unless you feel like you need to use only 2 spells (Chaos Bed Vestige is too good to pass imo). If going for 4, might as well go 30ATN for 5 slots. Vestiges and Chaos Orb are incredible spells that complement each other and useful depending on who you're fighting.
The mage is primarily designed as a DPS build so in order to defeat certain bosses you may have to swallow your pride and summon NPC phantoms to help tank some of the boss's aggro. Always be well aware of your environment. Try to outsmart foes. Play tactically. Other than that, all I can say is happy maging.

Every build is viable. Magic and pyromancy is actually quite OP in DS1, so yes very viable. I would start as a Sorcerer as you can get access to NPC vendors selling spells quicker than pyromancy, but you get the first pyro vendor not long after.

They're ideal for ultra low-level builds because once you know where to go and how to spend your money, you can cauterize Lordran at the wave of your hand.It seems the scaling is all kinds of wack to reinforce pure builds, but pure pyromancy seems too demanding to be viable. I completed the game yesterday, optional bosses and all, as a pure pyromancer. No melee or shields used. It's definitely tough during the early stages, but it ends up being pretty powerful late game.Also poison pyros are strong in ds2 pve. You can toxic and poison some bosses for great damage. It feels like spellcast makes a difference when maxed out using clearstone ring, lion mage set and high attunement. And high att means more casting, i love pyro without using weapons to clear levels.Craving to dive back into this game after finishing it 2 years ago for the first time. 1st playthrough was a strength big boi sword build, now I want to do pyromancy with dex weapons (just as I did my 2nd playthrough of DS1). No essential rings with a pyro build, imho. Best spells are Great Combustion and Black Flame, and Fire Tempest. Get your dex up to 45, that will increase your casting speed and give the scythe tons of damage. I recommend the wood grain ring for mobility and the bellowing dragoncrest ring for extra pyro damage.
