I have a 2004 Impala SS Indianapolis Edition. It's all stock with the exception of some visual modifications. For the past couple of months, I have been hearing what seems to be a knocking sound from the rear end. I only hear this sound when the car is parked and idling.

The LT1 has been known to make certain noises on cold start up. First is a ticking noise. This is a metallic tick that soon goes away as the engine warms. this can be a sticking valve lifter or a exhaust manifold leak from loose or broken bolts. Some LT1's have even had cracked E/M's.Three of them are the same - one on each side, over the hump, and one behind the glove box on the right. The first two control the driver and passenger side blend doors, respectively. The one behind the glove box controls the recirc mechanism. These are the ones usually making the noise.

The passengers temp door actuator is located towards the center of the dash and the recir door located at the outer side of the dash. Put you hand on the actuators when they are making the noise and you can feel which actuator is bad. Replace that actuator by removing the screws (2) that hold it on. Then you are finished with the repair. Having the same thing going on with my 2008 Impala LS at 42,000 miles. If I turn the fan speed up (with the outside air option LED lit) and press the snowflake (to kick on the compressor) it doesn't make the knocking noise. Switch the air from outside air to recirculate and I hear the knocking noise from under the dash. Crunching or clicking is often associated with a bad CV joint and happens during a tight turn.
